I'll Be a Star Tomorrow

from Honky Tonk Haze (Deluxe Version!) by Alison Self

/

about

This song was written in September 2020. This is the only track I have ever written and then recorded an actual version of within 2 weeks of writing it. The song is about those gigs i’ve played where you’re stuck under a TV with NASCAR playing on mute. Some dudes looking at you like you’re a chicken wing and he’s really hungry. No one is really listening but at the same time people seem to want to dance but all I feel like doing is playing some sad bastard songs to piss everyone off. I might also have been doing some stuff in the bathroom, and then I realize theres a velvet jesus on the wall and he’s looking at me like a disappointed father.

Nights like these the only way I get through the gig is to tell myself that these gigs are a stepping stone to bigger things and also build character. Maybe someone will start a fight so I can just get the show shut down and go home and drink.

lyrics

I play down at the local bar
but no one comes to see me
bartender pours me half a shot
of shitty, dusty whiskey
these people in my company just feeding off my misery
if i don’t play some dancing songs
my weekend gig is history

-Chorus-
I’ll be a star tomorrow if i can just get through tonight
maybe i’ll get off the hook if someone starts a fight
times like these ya know it seems there aint no end in sight
well i’ll be a star tomorrow
if i can just get through tonight

Some guys looking at me funny
I know just what he’s thinking
thinks he’s gonna get lucky tonight
cause he sees that i been drinking
well i’d have to chug this bottle down
just to give him half a chance
aw shit, he’s coming over here
he’s gonna ask me to dance

Chorus
Same
except lyric is changed to “Maybe i’ll get off the hook “when” someone starts a fight”

I’ve never been religious
no i’ll probably burn in hell
or be drinking with the devil
and i think that suits me well
but tonight i’m having second thoughts
playing to this velvet jesus
cause when we’re blowing in the bathroom
his ol’ crying eyes still see us

Chorus
Same
except “Maybe i’ll get off the hook “please” someone start a fight”
