Well I aint never lived in a trailer but i saw many of them with my mama and her best friends as they would drink in the kitchen and i would sit on the front porch watching my best friend shave her legs a coffee cup and a razor we were only 10 we wanted to be women and grocery store check out line we were broke, didn’t have a dime and my mama never had a chance grandma ignored us while we paid with food stamps Oh Jamie, where are you now? Are you that number that the news is talking about? Well I remember when we would play at your grandmas house And my daddy never had a lot except making promises he mostly forgot but we’d drink glass cokes and walk that railroad line behind his neighborhood that was another time Oh and seaboard street aint been the same since the bank came and took the house away they locked my daddy in that jail cell just like his brother cause you can never help yourself Well i grew up, mostly got away the hatred dies but the guilt grows every day and your names will always chill me i’m sorry Darlene, I’m sorry Jamie Oh Darlene where are you now? I heard your baby’s got a baby and she’s strung out with a blacked eye still living at your house

about

This EP was recorded in my basement. It is a gritty glimpse into one night of me playing a show at a noisy honky tonk, and what tends to happen as the night wears on.

The title “Honky Tonk Haze” is a fitting reference. We’ve all had at least one of those nights. Maybe a night spent on the town, drinking, flirting, shit talkin’ and spending a little bit more than you maybe should have. You wake up without your wallet, don’t know where you parked your car, forget you don’t even have a car, maybe you don’t even recognize where you are or who the hell is sleeping next to you.

The idea for the EP to have “skits” after each song was an idea of mine I had never pulled the trigger on in other recordings. It was something that was initially an attitude of “lets see if this is funny and fits in”. That idea evolved into all of us spitballing ideas for them. It really took off and we spent some good time in front of a mic while we pretended we were drunk patrons at a bar, clanked glasses around and dropped stuff on the ground.

These are an important part of the album for me because as well as setting a theme/mood, I feel that a lot of songwriters take themselves really seriously. I wanted the album to reflect my personality and to be funny as well as relatable through the original material.

I wrote all these songs over the years, although some are less than a year old. It’s about damn time I got them recorded. I’ll let the album speak for itself in terms of it’s “sound”. I just like to go in and let the songs be what they want to be.

I grew up working class in Petersburg VA and after that, my entire adult life I’ve moved around: hitch hiking, sometimes train hopping, sleeping in questionable places, playing on the street for money, playing great gigs and bad ones, i’ve lived in a few different places and I have a lot of good stories that my songs help me tell.

My last recording was in 2014. Other than good ‘ol lack of motivation and moving a lot, eventually I did have a major setback. The details are an entire story in themselves, but I got a colon cancer diagnosis in 2018. It was rough, I came out of surgery and chemo totally fine thankfully, but it had drained me. By the time I felt like I was hitting my stride, in came COVID. I’m glad we continue to survive and create in the face of this sometimes harsh world.

I hope you have as much fun listening to this damn thing as we all did making it. Hopefully this EP will help motivate me to keep recording ridiculous shit in our basement.
